On Jan. 29, 2008, Florida voters passed a constitutional amendment changing property tax laws in Florida. 

 

The new law provides the following:
An Additional Homestead Exemption, Portability of the "Save Our Homes" Benefit from one homestead to another, a Cap on Annual Assessment Increases of Non-Homesteaded Property and a Tangible Personal Property Exemption.

More Property Tax Proposals on November Ballot
In November 2008, Florida voters will have an opportunity to vote on more changes to state law relating to property taxes. (One aimed at reducing local school property taxes was recently removed by from the ballot; however the state will appeal the decision. Information will be posted as it becomes available.)

Notices of Proposed Property Taxes have been mailed to property owners. If you have questions regarding the values on this notice, please contact the Property Appraiser's Office for an informal review. If you are not satisfied with the outcome of the review or choose not to contact the Property Appraiser's Office, you have 25 days following the mailing of the notices to file a formal petition to have your property's value or an exemption decision changed. Petition forms are available in the Property Appraiser's Office, or online at the Value Adjustment Board. This year's deadline is September 9. All petitions must be received in the VAB office (not postmarked) by this date.

 

File for Homestead Exemption

Late applications for exemptions and portability for the 2008 Tax Roll are being accepted through September 9. (On-time deadline was March 1.) Late filers must file a late application and submit a petition to the Value Adjustment Board with a $15 fee. Late applications for exemptions and portability must be submitted in person in the Property Appraiser's Office, 231 East Forsyth Street, Suite 260.

 

The Property Appraiser's Office is now accepting exemption and portability applications for the 2009 Tax Roll. (If you purchased and moved into your home after January 1, 2008, you may now file for a 2009 exemption.)E-mail applications for 2009 are encouraged and available from the link at the top of this section. Attach the signed form with scans of all other required documentation to your e-mail and send to PACustServ@coj.net.  Contact us at this address if you need further assistance or call (904) 630-2020.

Need to change your tax roll mailing address? (Agents must submit a letter of authorization signed by the property owner.)  Send to: PAAdmin@coj.net You can verify the information on your property by looking it up online using our Property Search.

More Property Data Now Available  - Need data?  Check out the new Real Estate & Tangible Property Search on this web site.

     In addition to our Basic Search, you can now narrow searches and extract specific categories of information from the county's property data base using the new Advanced Search. This includes our "In Progress" working numbers. (Please note: These are subject to change.) Using this new Advanced Search, you can search for property based on a number of factors such as property type, sales data and price, property location and size just to name a few.  Data can be also downloaded in two formats –Excel and comma-delimited text.
